No, non è il titolo di un libro, ma della nostra vita reale. Ormai siamo sempre più spiati tramite i cellulari, i computer, le videocamere, e fin qui nulla di nuovo. Ma avete mai pensato che il nuovo smart TV che avete appena comprato, che fa tante cose come navigare in internet, videochiamare o visualizzare le nostre foto in full HD, sappia tutto di noi e non solo, comunichi a "qualcun'altro" tutto quello che facciamo sul divano di casa?
Sembra fantascienza ma non lo è. Gli smart TV di oggi si collegano ad internet, spesso hanno una videocamera e un microfono per essere comandati tramite i gesti o le parole. Peccato che, anche solo in condizioni di uso "normale", questi apparecchi siano sempre in "ascolto" nel cuore della nostra casa e mandino tutto quello che sentono (e forse anche vedono) a non meglio precisati "terzi".
Non ci credete? Leggete ad esempio questo estratto dalle
condizioni di utilizzo dei TV Samsung, vi farà rizzare i capelli:
"Siete pregati di tenere presente che se le vostre parole pronunciate includono informazioni personali o altre informazioni sensibili, tali informazioni faranno parte dei dati catturati e trasmessi a terzi tramite il vostro uso del Riconoscimento Vocale."
Se poi pensiamo che a fare funzionare questi apparecchi normalmente è un sistema Linux a cui l'utente non può accedere direttamente, chiediamoci in che modo i produttori facciano gli aggiornamenti di sicurezza (quasi mai). Ecco quindi che i nostri televisori diventano automaticamente vulnerabili a virus informatici da Internet (cui sono collegati) e magari prendere parte ad attacchi verso altri a nostra insaputa.
Vi sembra sempre più impossibile? Vi dirò di più: non solo
è già successo, ma questo può capitare anche a qualsiasi altro elettrodomestico "smart" che abbiamo in casa, frigorifero o lavatrice che sia!
Dobbiamo quindi abbandonare l'idea di comprare questi oggetti che, effettivamente, hanno funzioni evolute che ci possono semplificare la vita? Direi di no, ma sicuramente dobbiamo fare molta attenzione a questi aspetti, leggere bene le condizioni di utilizzo ed eventualmente bloccare le funzioni che non ci sono necessarie, tramite impostazioni o mezzi più drastici, tipo scollegarli dalla rete o coprire le webcam con un nastro adesivo.
Essere informati è la cosa più importante, in modo da poter decidere se il prezzo che paghiamo in più per queste funzioni a volte "spione" ci vada bene o meno, e poter scegliere se comprare un oggetto "smart" o magari uno con funzioni meno evolute ma decisamente meno invasive.

No, it is not a book title, but about our real life. We are already spied on throughout our mobiles, computers, webcams, and that is not news. But have you ever thought that your brand new smart TV, doing amazing things like Internet surfing, video chatting or full HD pictures viewing, knows everything about us and moreover, tells everything we do on our home sofa to "somebody else"?
It seems pure science-fiction, but it is not. Nowadays smart TVs are connected to Internet, they often come with integrated webcam and microphone in order to be controlled by gestures or words. Unfortunately, even with "normal" usage, these devices are always "listening" in the heart of our home and send everything they hear (and potentially they see) to not well defined "third parties".
Do you think it is not true? Read for example this extract from the
usage conditions for Samsung TVs, it will be shocking: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition."
Moreover, if we think that these appliances are normally run by a Linux operating system not directly accessible by the user, let's ask ourselves how often they get updated (very rarely). Therefore, our TVs automatically get vulnerable to internet viruses (they are always online) and maybe could join a wider attack against others without our knowledge.
Do you think it is definitely impossible? I will tell you more: not only
has it already happened, but this could apply to any other "smart" appliance we have at home, whatever fridge or dishwasher!
So, do we have to drop the idea of buying these devices that, honestly, have advanced features that could make our lives easier?
I would say no, but for sure we will have to take more care about these aspects, read carefully the usage conditions and eventually block unnecessary functions, through settings or more drastic ways, such as unplug them from the net or taping over the webcam.
Getting informed is the most important thing, in order to be able to choose if the increased price we are going to pay for these sometimes "eavesdropper" features will be ok for us, and to let us decide whether to buy a "smart" device or maybe a less advanced one, but definitely less invasive.
